Electrification

Diesel pollution is incredibly dangerous and harming communities across the country.

Electrification of medium- and heavy-duty trucks will save lives.

EMA's approach to electrification and moving forward with a zero-emission future seems to be as follows: Why rush to have quiet, clean, and efficient electric trucks when you could hold onto diesel just a liiiiiiitle bit longer?

It is encouraging to see that some of EMA's members (Ford, GM, and Cummins) have publicly declared their support for electrification and distanced themselves from EMA’s lawsuit.

If just heavy-duty fleets were to move to zero-emissions nationally the benefits by 2050 could reach:

  • $735 billion in public health savings

  • 66,800 premature deaths avoided

  • 1.75 million fewer asthma attacks

  • Major reductions in greenhouse gasses that amplify risks to public health, air quality and more

Not only will electrification save lives and generate billions in public health savings but it can save fleet owners money as well.

By 2027, it is projected that all medium- and heavy-duty will be cheaper or equal to the equivalent ICE vehicle. (Roush/EDF, Feb 2022)

Battery-electric vehicles appear cost competitive with the established combustion technologies by 2025 in a variety of use cases. (CARB, 2021).
